My Civil War Ancestors
These are my ancestors with
Civil War service that I can prove. There may have been a couple
more. When I get a chance, I will flesh out the descriptions of
the service of my ancestors.
Friedrich Wilhelm August Bastian - Friedrich
was a member of Company A 1st U.S. Sharpshooters, drafted in New
York City and discharged during training due to poor eye sight.
Frederick claimed that the bitter cold winter experienced during
his training damaged his eyes. He eventually became totally
blind. He received a pension for his service and was an
active member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). His
service was ironic as he stowed away on a ship at the age of 14
to avoid conscription into the Prussian army and came to New
York.
John William Henderson - John was a Private in the Union
Army, a member of the Enrolled Missouri Militia, 49th Regiment
E.M.M., Company A. He was also a Private in the Pike
County Regiment of the Missouri Home Guard, Company B. He
received a pension for his service.
Thomas Jefferson Gibson - Thomas was a Private in the
Union Army, a member of the Enrolled Missouri Militia, 49th
Regiment E.M.M., Company A. He was also a Private in the 39th
Regiment of the Missouri Infantry, Company C. While he was on a
detail conveying Confederate prisoners to the Gratiot Prison in
St. Louis, most of Company C was wiped out in an ambush. He
received a pension for his service and injuries suffered while
serving.
